The nationalization of the church lands and property generally, was precipitated by the old trouble. The exhausted state of the treasury. Necar had devised every conceivable plan for raising the wind and failed. But now that the die was cast, they were implacable. All these measures were very interesting and showed a laudable activity on the part of the body politic. But they did not affect the crowds to be seen daily at the bakers shops ever and anon breaking out into tumult. Any further grumbling was obviously to bes pressed with drastic measures.
