The Consequences of Language

The subject is neither one nor the other, but the joining of them. A signifier has meaning only through its relation to another signifier. It's at the level of the relationship that the signifier takes on meaning. The first and foremost consequence of language when it is introduced into your life was prohibition. Castration does not mean that somebody is manually cutting at your junk. This is not a physical enterprise.
