The History of Queer Identity in New Zealand

The history of LGBTQ plus people in 19th and early 20th century New Zealand is a tricky thing to talk about precisely because it was mostly kept secret. Professor Chris Brickle says one of the important things to wrap your head around when studying this history is that queer identity simply didn't exist in the same way back in the 19th andEarly 20th century as it does now. Even the term homosexual could have a huge variety of meanings based on who you talk to. In New Zealand some people thought homosexuality was sex between an adult man and an adolescent boy but there were also lots of opportunities made available through urbanization, he says.
