Mendelssohn is showing us in this passage there are two ideas going on, an energetic and rhythmic idea, and a lyrical one. In one sense this is cookie cutter exposition writing in a sonata form movement. But for now Mendelssohn can't resist returning back to his first theme. We've arrived now at one of our rare excursions into a minor key.
