Is America the Future?
I don't think he's really trying to say very much at all about America. He was a middle class successful socialist working in a job that actually I think he regarded as worthwhile and important. But then also I think it's kind of... There's lots of darkness already because in America humans are turned into machines all the time. They are completely subordinate to tasks for which they have no autonomy at all to behave. Not like a machine is to be damned. And I mean the society was in was horrible. It was horrible. For me the thing is that you go through all of that and then you're sort of constantly coming out the other side of it into these experiences of beauty.
