Many miners traveling by sea began arriving in California several months ahead of their overland counterparts. Many found themselves stuck for weeks and cities at the edge of the frontier like St. Louis While they waited for the spring thaw But some St. Louis merchants took advantage of these new arrivals Charging out rages prices for food and livestock The migrants usually paid up eager to get on their way.
