Augustine's Confessions

Augustine is thought to be the first person to write an autobiography. He was a professional rhetorician, and used rhetoric in his confessions. Augustine writes a book in which he finally says, in my search for god and to find out who i was, i had to turn inside myself. So augustine is the source of the most common contemporary popular understanding of what the search for self knowledge is all about.
