What's the Motivating Principle Behind Unionization?

I think in the 70s, the word union took on a negative term. There's a point in history where unions become what I would call a controlled issue. Once they have you as a voting bloc, they don't really have to pay that much attention to you. And far too often it's just resentment in the classical sense. It's about power dynamics and confrontation.
