The History of Bartolomu Diaz
Bartolomu Diaz was the first European to reach Madagascar, as well as much of the eastern coast of Africa. King John rechristened the Cape of Storms as the Cape of Good Hope after his expedition in 1497. The Portuguese were quick to follow up with yet another expedition to Asia in 1500. It would be led by Pedro Alvarez Cabral and take place off the southern tip of Africa. But it is not known what happened to four ships commanded by Diaz when they tried to sail round the Cape on March 9, 1500. So far we only know that he died at sea trying to do so.
