The History of the Silicon Photometer
silicon version swamps the selenium plate for something more sophisticated. It's a regular grid of P-in junction diodes, but that might make it sound a little rough. The instrument described by McCord and Westfall could tell you exactly how many photons hit each point on the grid. That's a lot better than some relative measure of brightness. Its grid contained 256 points, 256 discrete pixels.
