The Power of Humor

In 1709, Shaftesbury's essay on the freedom of wit and humor suggested that laughter is a release of excess animal spirits. Sigmund Freud en jokes in their relation to the subconscious in 1905, says that the energy is caused by repressed sexual urges which are released through the muscles by laughing. And if you had too much of one of them, you would start to act in this sort of comedic way. This idea comes into the present day with celebrity roast or Ricky Gervais teasing celebrities at the Golden Globes.
