Is There a Long Run of Less Ice?

It'll take all of the ice trapped in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets millennia to melt. However the melt we're seeing now which is accelerating thanks to our fondness for fossil fuels means sea levels will rise significantly this century and in the centuries to come. The process of studying these ice sheets involves long days of physical labour setting up rigs, fixing weather stations,. shunting boxes of heavy kit in and out of a helicopter. One reward for these scientists comes at the end of the day when dog tired they can grab a drink stare up at the northern lights dancing in the sky.
