Toussaint's First Approach to the American Government

The Northern merchants were suffering badly from the loss of trade with the colony. Toussaint Louverture was able to make his own case to the American government for maintaining trade. He wrote a letter to President John Adams, saying: "My goal will always be to protect American shipping, not attack it"
