We had a great system of mutual aid. They were called friendly societies for eternal societies in the United States. The social safety net was woven by people in peer to peer fashion. Instead of like putting money into one big bureaucratic pot that gets dispensed algorithmically over to people, you can look out for each other as neighbors and in love.
