I first met him at Oxford in 1967 when I was... Okay, that's a long time ago. You were minus 20 years old or something. But there was a conference where he gave famous talk about Knott's. That talk the source of thousands and thousands of papers since then. And later in 1972, my sabbatical year began and I went to Norway. The thought came to me: Conway's theory about numbers would be a great thing to teach students how to invent research. So this book is now published as surreal numbers.
