The US Church Is a Voluntary Association
Much of the church understands itself as a voluntary association a notion that brings with it little spine for resistance. Bruggeman doesn't mince words and even though he says he doesn't write much about this accommodation he also says a lot of people haven't have heard this already but I don't think they have or we wouldn't still be in this situation now would we? "It's very difficult for said church to really foster strong identity local tradition community"
