The idea of quantitative aesthetics comes to me out of like finding or thinking about some kind of deeper structure idea beneath a lot of these things. The last 10 years have seen this fallout from the Great Recession and that's combined with the rise in inequality and so on. And I read this Nathan Heller essay and it really struck me as another factor to throw into the mix of what was making culture feel different in this time period. That sort of manifests as its own kind of independent variable, which is like the changing status of the humanities in relationship to the science.
