Abortion had not been understood to be a crime in the mid 19th century. It was something that women did often with the help of midwives or folk healers using abortifacients and other strategies people terminated abortions routinely. Only many years later that it came to be labeled as a crime due to a campaign largely by doctors who were trying to rest control over health care away from these midwives and sort of unlicensed healers and bring it under the control of a formalized profession.
