secular critics of the book have seen it as a kind of statement of american exceptionalism. There is even a passage in the book that many readers interpret as suggesting god led christopher columbus to land in theAmericas in 14 92. Both the christian and secular criticisms push against the new claims and new history the book presented. They felt it was positining itself as superior to antiquity and the bible. But i have to say that internal content of the book does not actually position itself in anything like this orientation. Instead, at i i read it is actually working against such an interpretation.
