Hobbes was a controversial figure in his own time. Many christian writers opposed him. They accused him of being an atheist and therefore a kind of moral nihilist, and so on. But he wasn't a nihilist when it comes to ethical questions. He has very rich ethics. Even modern contemporary interpreters have sometimes not quite appreciated the extent to which he has a rich conception of ethics.
