The initial ban on blood donations for gay and bisexual men actually started in the early 80s. There was a ban put in place to make sure that the nation's blood supply was safe. And luckily, we're now at a place where science has advanced to the point where people who are living with HIV are living long, healthy lives if they're able to get into care and maintain care.
