Introduction

In 1928, the Scottish microbiologist Alexander Fleming found a bacteria called staphylococcus aureus. Penicillin was hailed as a miracle drug that could treat throat infections and meningitis. In 1931, when prohibition had been in effect for 11 years, member of British Parliament Sir Winston Churchill was on a lecture tour through the United States. While he was in New York City, Churchill looked the wrong way when crossing a street. He was hit by a car zipping along Fifth Avenue at around 35 mph.
