The Sick Woman of East Asia

In the late 19th and early 20 centuries, women were told they had to be physically strong in order for china to overcome its gepolitical weakness. This put a tremendous amount of pressure on women at the time. The book tries to analyze this by using the term 'sick woman' which is masculine and feminine. It's just such a prevalent assumption that chinese are physically different from other races entirely.
