The Barrier to AI Automating AI Research and Development
I find myself thinking that AI would have trouble automating the role of a CEO. And so, wouldn't that be a barrier to AI automating AI research and development? I think it would. In fact, in Tom's model, once you have systems that can really kind of fully substitute for human cognitive labor, you don't even need to boost their capabilities all that much further to end up in a very scary situation. If humans are out of the loop entirely, then it's an especially easy to imagine that things go off the rails.
