In the nineteenth century, cuba sees slave rebellions, an abolitionist movement and als a growing independence movement inspired by the venezuelan pan american revolutionary simon bolevar. All of it created a real problem for the spanish overlords who ended up having to put down a war for cuban independence in the middle of the nineteenth century. By this point, we see the looming hand of the yankee. The united states already has its claws inside of cuba.
