The Origins of David in the Bible
Until 1993, there was no historical evidence. There were mentions of David but those were always in literature that was dependent on the Bible. In 1993 an inscription from Israel mentioned David and it actually doesn't refer to David as an individual. It uses the name David in an expression house of David, which is a reference to the Davidic line or dynasty. But even when it was discovered by the way, a year later, there was an enormous amount of debate about whether this was indeed house of David.
