Ivan is an example of someone who like rationalizes away the existence of God and then he ends up having this like split in his mind where he's like you know he's talking to the devil at the end. Well but religious people aren't really even part of the conversation though because they are like a holdover in this society in western civilization. The society itself is defined by nihilism and by by the scientific rationalistic worldview. This is exactly what Nietzsche is addressing and this is exactly what Freud would call the super ego it wasn't mediated by the voice in your head that's like rationalizing everything right?
