The Origins of Rare Earths
Rare earth refers to 17 chemically similar elements. They have a vast and wondrous array of applications. Scandium, for example, is used equally to make the lenses in rose-colored glasses or produce red lasers that are used in precision-guided missiles. Disprosium is used in control rods for nuclear reactors, and Scimarium is used to treat lung cancer.
