The Power of Meaning in Film and TV

For as long as there have been stories, human beings have looked to stories for meaning. And so it's our job as screenwriters to make sure we don't well know what meaning we are actually communicating. Every single element of how a story is built grows out of the theme, it grows out of what are you building. It allows you to know which brainstorms are brainstorms that fulfill the script and which add to what you're trying to build.
