The Relationship Between the Baltic States and Russia

The Baltic states were among those parts of the Soviet Union that were pushing for independence. They gained their independence from Moscow back in September of 1990. So you have a very troubled history between the Baltic states and the Soviet Union. And what I think you've seen over the last 30 years, really beginning fairly early on in the 90s, was a determination in all three Baltic states to join institutions such as the European Union and NATO. The depressing conventional wisdom was that the Baltic states would be acting more as a tripwire for NATO forces rather than an impenetrable steel wall like they often portray themselves.
