The book really challenges a linear teleological transition or narrative of moving from the imperial subjects to republican citizens. So I feel this kind of different framework and also the narrative afforded to this two party also conditioned by their position, their place in the over-or national politics at the time. The process of literacy training actually not only affected the relationship between the illiterate adults and the state, but also affected how illiterate adults position themselves in relation to their family members,. peers and the townsmen.
