The Roman Legion
A Roman army was led by a consul and would usually consist of two Roman legions and two allied legions known as the Allah. This would be approximately about 20,000 men but in times of crisis or war this could be expanded up to almost 40,000. The Roman Legion consisted of three lines of heavy infantry. Each line consisted of 10 manneples. Now each manneple was about 120 to about 160 men. So for simplicity's sake it'd be about five thousand people per legion. And what do these five thousand people use on the field of battle? Because one of the most imposing aspects of the Roman army was that they had standardization of their equipment.
