Is There Acute Radiation Syndrome?
If you are exposed to less than about 500 millisieverts of total body radiation, you basically won't see any of these syndromes. What symptoms you're going to see depend on what cell type and how quickly those cells replicate. So the GI symptoms are some of the first that you see because the turnover of our epithelial cells of the GI tract are like seven or eight days,. Whereas our red blood cells have a lifetime of about 120 days. It takes a long time before you'll see any anemia from radiation exposure.
