What Is Cicero's Moral and Political Thought?
Cicero says we must keep ourselves free from every disturbing emotion or passion, not only from desire and fear but also from excessive pain and pleasure. The 18th century was the moment when many philosophers began to think about what it means to have reason in order to form republics. In order to have reason you have to imagine what its opposites are in order to frame who the enemies of the republic might be.
