The Assyrian Empire in the Iron Age

For the Neo-Assyrian rulers, there was no meaningful distinction between what we call the Middle Assyrian period of the late Bronze Age and their reconstituted Empire. This dramatically changed world goes a long way toward explaining precisely how Assyria became the first world empire in the centuries to come. Ashward Don II's best documented conquest was that of the small kingdom of Kathmuhu on the eastern border of that core triangle. The king was then flayed alive and his skin was hung on a city wall as a warning. If potential enemies were deathly afraid, they were more likely send a force without an occupying force to occupy them.
