The springs of affection and sub-titled stories of Dublin is a collection of 21 stories, roughly divided into three sections. The first section is autobiographical and features instance from Maeve's childhood in suburban Dublin. The second explores the painful complexities of the marriage of Rose and Hubert Durden who live in the same or a similar house and suburb that Maeve grew up in. As do the baguettes, the family that are the subject of the final eight stories, including the long final story that gives the book its title - which William Maxwell considered to be one of the greatest stories of the 20th century.
