What Is the Key to Civilization?
The assumption always was that if you want colonial people to understand the colonizer, the key is language and culture. And they had to believe in englishness. That, oh, an englishness was at the centre of the idea of civilization all the way from india to australia to south africa. There is that famous quote from saul bello who said, who is the tolstoy of the zulus, the priest of the papuins? Yes, the idea that those civilizations, those cultures could never uce a great writer.
