Disney Movie Review

I appreciate that it's like a more complex depiction of a grandparent, you know, where they're all right or all bad. And one of the things that really spoke to me was when the family is sort of like arguing and stuff about the responsibilities that they have. The fact that she doesn't have one really sort of put a spotlight on that character flaw of the, of the grandma. I feel oldest, oldest kids, especially the oldest of immigrant kids. You can be a partner at a law firm and your parents may still be mad at you because you married a white guy or a Japanese guy or something. Like just just something like it's just never enough for you.

I mean,
Speaker 2
I do appreciate that it's like, I mean, I don't, I don't honestly don't watch a ton of new Disney movies, but like, yeah, I appreciate that it's like a more complex depiction of a grandparent, you know,
Speaker 1
where they're all right or all bad. I really
Speaker 2
love that. Yeah. And I feel like that is, I mean, especially just like, you know, being Latina, being like the daughter of immigrants, like that shit is complicated. There's all that stuff on you that hasn't, you know, they've just, they've been through some shit, they've seen some shit, they have worked really hard to create a better life for you. And you know, it's coming from a good place. It is. Yeah. If you have to remember that, but it doesn't always feel like it is.
Speaker 1
Yeah, for sure. I mean, so, so for the listeners, I mean, this isn't the trailer, but like the, the story begins with the, the one of the daughters, she reaches a certain age and she doesn't have magic. So she doesn't get her own room and all of her sisters and cousins have magic. And so that's just like where the disconnect comes from. And one of the things that really spoke to me was at a certain point, like when the family is sort of like arguing and stuff about the responsibilities that they have, her relatives magic start to weaken. So one of her sisters is like, has super strength. She can like lift the building, but sometimes she feels weak. And we find out it's, it's because to the grandma, that girl's never going to be strong enough. Even though she can lift the church with her left hand, it's not, it's not enough for grandma because grandma went through genocide. And so grandma thinks we only need to be doing more, more and more and more. It's never enough. And so like the her not having a power, it's like, it's almost, it almost doesn't matter because even if she had a power, it wouldn't be enough for grandma. And the fact that she doesn't have one really sort of put a spotlight on that character flaw of the, of the grandma. And that's the part that really, I don't know, it kind of struck a chord with me because I feel like I see that with my friends, you know, like, I mean, how many, how many friends do you have who are like, Mike, give so many friends who are like partners at their law firm? And I mean, you know, you have some personal stuff going on too, but it's like, you can have all these things, you could be a partner at a law firm and your parents may still be mad at you because you married a white guy or a Japanese guy or something. You know what I mean? Like just just something like it's just never enough for you, you know, absolutely Daniel, you're, are you the oldest
Speaker 2
oldest? Oldest.
Speaker 1
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I feel oldest, oldest kids, especially the oldest of immigrant kids. No, I mean, I related the most to the, uh, to the older, the, the, the, the, no, to the daughter. Well, I'm stuck to the uncle a little bit. Yeah. Because, um, no, I'm sorry. I know she was real cute. Like, uh, no, I related to the oldest daughter because the, the one who's really strong. The perfect one for the perfect hair. Yeah. Yeah. No, no, no, that's the, I don't know who, which one that is, but the, the, where's the, the strong one, the super strong one, not because I'm super strong, but because it's like, you, I always felt like, oh, just put some more stuff to, you know what I'm saying, put more stuff on Mike, you know what I'm saying? That's fine. He can niggin' handle it, you know what I'm saying? Yeah. And that's why I ended up moving thousands of miles away. So it's like, if this movie was accurate, there would be like, okay, now Maribel is going to move to New York City. You know, it's like that's the only way to do it.
