Rome's earliest traces are overlaid by another 2,500 years of continuous use. Archaeologists don't have anything like a comprehensive picture of the earliest city. Trying to dig down to the very lowest layers is one of the great challenges in archaeology. The archaeological work that's been done tells us about patterns of habitation and burials.
