Pauli Applegate was one of 13,588 unaccompanied Jewish girls who came through Ellis Island in 1913. The US government mandated that no unaccompanied girls under the age of 16 could be legally admitted into the US. Pauli's father paid a rabbi to prepare her for the entrance exam which included studying Russian language, Hebrew history, and math.
