Most observers assumed the war would be decided in southern germany. Both sides had concentrated the largest numbers of forces in this region. Archduke charles and well over a hundred thousand hapsburg troops were standing in their way. Napoleon was counting on the army of reserve to deliver the killing blow against the austrians. But he repeatedly denied that he would lead it himself.
