The Relationship Between Father, Son and Spirit

The holy spirit is ordered third in the imminent trinity, but is located between the father and the son. In key respects, it's analogous to a child being closer to his or her parents than the parents are to each other. So you kind of need the spirit to mediate between them. But this, this sounds a heck of a lot like three separate divine beings.
