I think there's a lot of deterministic historical materialism. There's a place for individuals to have outsized influences at particular moments. And the different probabilities might describe very different trajectories. The experiments are still worth doing, though, for two reasons: They can lead to technological advances that could be very important and maybe they wouldn't agree with the predictions.
