How Do You Write a Book?

How do you figure out how much your big plot points or events are going to be spaced out? You know I think that this is a thing where you kind of have to often step back and look at the story as a whole. This is why I will sometimes outline after I finish writing a book because I want to identify what the big consequential events are.
