Confessions of Augustine - The Self and the Soul
The ancient thinkers like aristotle and plato conceive the self as a problem of the soul. I think augustine had just the opposite view. He shifted the whole question towards an experiential kind of understanding of the self. And i think that made autobiography and personal narrative very important for a whole series of reasons, which were taken up by writers who followed him.
