Symbols Are Tougher Than Words, Right?

The density and ability to manipulate easily images is way less than symbols. And it may be the grammatical language because it's such a compression, right? If we don't have symbols, we don’t have something like least partially recursive language. So having symbols may just make the brain exponentially more effective. That's an interesting question also if there is a continuum between human intelligence and ape intelligence rather than a sharp cut-off. What I've read seems to be it's not sharp, but it is a big, big gulf.
