Even when someone's just going through the motions at first, like you give someone $5 to write a position paper on why they support gun control. Having done that, having taken that position for whatever reason in a separate context later on, I will be more likely to affirm it. There is a fairly large body of evidence suggesting that we feel unconscious pressure to stick to positions that we've stated in the past. One story you could tell is that we sort of on some level want to show strength and consistency as a way to sort of demonstrate that we can be trusted to our fellow tribes people.
