In 1955, the US bought an enormous amount of poppies in order to have a stockpile of opiates just in case the Cold War got hot. The flowers went bad so they converted them into actual morphine. So there is still, I think, a United States morphine stockpile in Fort Knox. Or at least if there isn't, no one's told our question writer about it.
