The Problems of Big Cities
Jefferson wanted to keep America rural. He distrusted banks. And he worried about speculators in big cities. But Monticello was very much in that style and to get away from the salt boxes of New England. It was a deliberate attempt to echo the architecture and the grandeur of an earlier republic.
