The Importance of General Confession
In 1483 and 1484, the church says that only in cases of grave necessity can you have communal celebration of reconciliation with general confession and general absolution. That's where people just kind of all say, basically, we're all guilty. They don't name them necessarily individually. And then the priest gives general absolution to everyone gathered there. The bishop is the only one who can judge whether or not the conditions are required for general confession or general absolution exist. But recognize that even if it's offered, it's very, very rare. It's only cases ofgrave necessity.
